Society’s perception of artificial intelligence and other technology

Opinions on AI and digital innovations

In November 2023 280 Austrians were surveyed on behalf of the “Im-Fokus” report for m.core/WU Vienna. The focus was on how the participants perceive artificial intelligence and technology in general.

21.1% of the respondents agree with the statement that artificial intelligence has a variety of useful applications. In addition, a further 43.2% recognize at least some value in this technology. 18.6% of participants believe that artificial intelligence could be dangerous, and a further 29.3% share these concerns at least to some extent.

Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant are the best-known artificial intelligence applications. Only 6.8% of respondents are not familiar with these applications. Around a third (32.1%) of the respondents have tried the ChatGPT application at least once.

Assessment of the potential uses of artificial intelligence in various areas of life

The participants were also asked how they would assess the use of AI in various areas of life. The majority of respondents see it very negatively if AI were to be used in connection with religion and their faith. In areas such as education and training and health, on the other hand, opinions are more differentiated, so that no clear trend emerges here in terms of participants’ feelings.

In the following graphic, the participants were asked which of the artificial intelligences mentioned they know and use:

The survey was answered by 280 participants (51.1% female, 0.7% divers, 48.2% male), with an average age of 43.43 years (standard deviation 13.32).
