Sport and Physical Activity in Focus

Trends, Sports, and Everyday Movement Habits

Sport and physical activity are an integral part of everyday life for many people – whether as a way to balance work, improve health, or simply enjoy being active. But how much time do people actually invest in sports? Which activities are particularly popular? And what role do digital tools play?

These were exactly the questions addressed in our latest Im Fokus survey from February 2026, conducted in cooperation with m.core/WU Vienna, on sport and physical activity. A total of 307 people took part in the study (48.9% female, 50.8% male, 0.3% diverse; average age: 43.59 years).

How much sport is part of a typical week?

The results show: sport is a fixed part of everyday life for the vast majority.

92% of respondents stated that they engage in sports during a typical week. There are no significant differences between genders, nor is there any correlation with age.

Another interesting aspect is self-perception:
Participants believe they are, on average, more active than others of the same age and gender. While they estimate their own activity level mostly at 2 to under 3 hours per week, they assume others are more likely to spend 1 to under 2 hours.

Which sports are particularly popular?

Respondents were able to name up to five sports they regularly practice. The most frequently mentioned were cycling, swimming, running, and walking.

Other commonly mentioned activities include:

  • Yoga
  • Strength training
  • Skiing
  • Tennis
  • Hiking
  • Fitness and gymnastics
  • Football (soccer)
  • Pilates

Where does sport most often take place today?

The results show: flexible options are particularly in demand. Multiple answers were possible.

The most frequently mentioned locations were at home and in public spaces, followed by gyms, sports clubs, and flexible subscription models.

A closer look also reveals an interesting gender difference: women are significantly more likely to work out at home (55.8%) than men (44.2%).

What role do digital applications play in sports?

Digital technologies have long become part of many training routines. Around half of physically active respondents (50.4%) use digital applications or devices such as apps, smartwatches, or smart rings.

Smartwatches are particularly popular:
54% of those who use digital support rely on this device.

Conclusion

The results of the Im Fokus survey show that sport and physical activity are firmly embedded in everyday life for the majority of respondents. Flexible and easily accessible options – especially working out at home and in public spaces – are used most frequently. At the same time, there is a wide variety of sports being practiced, with a clear focus on endurance and recreational activities.

Overall, the findings highlight a clear trend toward more individualized, location-independent, and technology-supported exercise habits.
