Research Findings on airing and living

A look at the living situation and airing habits of Austrians

The research findings on airing and living of the Im-Fokus report, which was conducted among 320 Austrians in November 2024, provide fascinating insights into current trends and attitudes towards airing and the general living situation. In light of the airing trend in the USA, the attitudes of the Austrian population towards this topic were examined in more detail. In addition, the participants were asked about their satisfaction with their living situation and furnishings.

The majority of the respondents air at least once a day

Airing is also an important issue in Austria: 92% of respondents stated that they consider airing to be (very) important, with the majority opening the windows at least once a day. The main reasons why ventilation is considered necessary are fresh air, odor elimination and the prevention of mold growth. Nevertheless, there are external factors that make ventilation difficult: 51% of respondents cited bad weather or low temperatures as an obstacle, while 48% are put off by odors from the environment and 36% by unwanted animals such as insects. Noise, mentioned by 27% of respondents, can also have a negative impact on ventilation.

Satisfaction with the housing situation and furnishings is related to home ownership

The second part of the survey results on airing and living dealt with the living situation of the respondents. It was found that 52.9% of respondents live in their own home, while 47.1% live in rented accommodation. Austrians are particularly likely to live in apartments (185), followed by around a third (110) who live in detached houses. 19 people stated that they lived in a non-detached house.

A high level of satisfaction with their living situation was reported by 79% of respondents, with 80% also being “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with their home. It is particularly striking that home ownership is strongly linked to a higher level of satisfaction with the living situation and furnishings.

The survey results on airing and living therefore not only show how important fresh air and a good indoor climate are to Austrians, but also that home ownership has a significant influence on well-being in one’s own home.
