In the September Im-Fokus Report, 253 Austrians were asked on the topic of “Digital technologies in everyday life”. The survey shows correlations between level of education, age, gender and average screen time. The report also looks at respondents’ thoughts on technology and its impact on their daily lives.
The majority of respondents own a smartphone
Almost all respondents (98.8%) stated that they own a smartphone. When asked how much time is spent in front of a screen on average, a distinction was made between leisure time and work/training. This reveals different usage habits between these two areas: During leisure time, participants tend to spend less time in front of a screen.
Further findings in connection with average screen time are:
– The higher the level of education, the higher the average screen time during work (r=.30, p<.01).
– Male respondents spend more time in front of the screen at work on average (U=9474.5, p<.01)
– The younger the respondents, the less time they spent in front of a screen: in their free time (r=.28, p<.01) and at work (r=.22, p<.01).
Do digital technologies make life better?
The study participants were asked to respond to the statement “All in all, digital technologies make my life better”. Agreement was in the upper middle range. They were also asked what the level of agreement would be among other people of the same age and gender. Here too, agreement was in the upper middle range – slightly higher than in the question about their own opinion.
